Woodland House, Berkshire

Sorbon Estates initially appointed Ben Reed Architects to provide the working drawings for a single detached house on the site that had already gained planning consent. However, we proposed an alternative scheme which would not only be more sustainable and sympathetic to the surroundings, but would also offer great value for the plot.

Ben Reed Architects therefore redesigned the scheme in a very contemporary style. Chalk cladding to the lower level references the local chalk pits, timber cladding to the middle floor reflects the surrounding woodland, and slate cladding to the top floor references the roofs to nearby houses.

This large family eco-home will therefore nestle sympathetically into its rural surroundings whilst making the most of the long views across the landscape.

A combination of low-and high-tech solutions, such as wood-burning stoves, photovoltaic panels and a highly insulated envelope, will create a modern, net zero-carbon home.
