Vineyard and Farm Estate, West Sussex
Across the rolling landscape of West Sussex, Ben Reed Architects approach began with the careful repurposing and extension of existing farm buildings, preserving the character and working heritage of the estate while enabling a new future for the vineyard. Traditional agricultural structures—barns, sheds, and utility buildings—are thoughtfully adapted to support contemporary vineyard operations, new commercial uses and visitor experiences. By retaining original materials and forms wherever possible, the architecture maintains a strong connection to the rural setting, allowing the estate’s historic fabric to remain visible and meaningful.
New buildings and additions are designed with a contemporary sensibility that complements the agricultural aesthetic of the existing structures. Clean, restrained forms, natural materials, and carefully considered proportions ensure that the new architecture sits comfortably within the working landscape of the vineyard. Rather than replicating historic buildings, the design strategy creates a respectful dialogue between old and new—where modern interventions enhance the character of the farmstead while supporting the evolving needs of a thriving wine-producing estate.
Flexibility and adaptability are central to the design approach, enabling the estate to diversify its activities and generate long-term value. Spaces are conceived to support a range of uses—from wine production and storage to tastings, events, hospitality, weddings and seasonal programming. This layered functionality allows buildings to evolve over time as the vineyard grows, creating new revenue opportunities while ensuring the estate remains resilient, vibrant, and economically sustainable.
