New Urban Quarter, Windsor
The project reimagines a forgotten commercial courtyard in Windsor, transforming an underused and fragmented space into a vibrant urban destination. Hidden behind the surrounding streets, the courtyard retains a rich layer of Victorian industrial architecture that speaks to the area’s historic commercial life. The design approach carefully reveals and restores these buildings, preserving their robust brickwork, generous openings and utilitarian character while introducing new uses that bring renewed energy and activity to the site.
Existing structures are sensitively refurbished to accommodate a mix of café, gallery and flexible commercial spaces, creating an animated cluster of independent venues arranged around the courtyard. The architectural interventions prioritise repair and subtle adaptation, allowing the industrial heritage of the buildings to remain legible while improving functionality, accessibility and environmental performance. Through this process, the courtyard regains a sense of coherence and purpose, becoming a welcoming place for visitors, workers and the local community.
Where buildings are no longer fit for purpose, they are replaced with carefully considered contemporary structures that respond to the scale, rhythm and materiality of the historic surroundings. These new elements establish a clear focal point within the courtyard, using modern architectural language to complement the Victorian fabric rather than compete with it. Together, the restored and newly designed buildings create a dynamic urban ensemble that reinvigorates this overlooked quarter of Windsor, drawing visitors from the streets beyond and establishing a distinctive new cultural and commercial destination.
