New Village Houses, Somerset

A collection of five contemporary homes set within a typical Somerset village, this development draws inspiration from the form and materiality of traditional stone agricultural buildings. The architecture reinterprets the familiar language of rural barns — robust masonry walls, simple pitched roofs, and restrained detailing — through a refined, contemporary approach.

Each house is conceived as a modern counterpart to the historic farmstead, with large glazed openings positioned to echo the proportions and rhythm of traditional barn doors. These expansive apertures flood the interiors with natural light while framing views of the surrounding landscape, reinforcing a strong connection to the rural setting.

Locally referenced stone anchors the buildings within their context, while crisp detailing and carefully integrated glazing introduce a distinctly modern character. The result is a cohesive yet varied group of homes that respects the village grain and agricultural heritage, offering a thoughtful contemporary reinterpretation of Somerset’s vernacular architecture.
